Five Reasons to Teach English as a Second Language

1. Nearly a billion people speak English. More than 375 million people speak English as their native language. It's the third most common language, behind Madarin and Spanish. Between 400-600 million people speak English as a second language.

2. English is the language used to communicate globally. English is used today for communication globally. While it is not the most common official language around the world, it is the most commonly taught second language. People learn English to communicate both with native and English speakers and other English as a second language speakers. Good English teachers are needed all over the world.

3. Literacy in English is in demand. Scientific articles, books, professional journals, and 80% of the content on the internet are all in English. Professionals in nearly every field benefit from learning English. The demand for trained ESL instructors is growing.

4. Teaching English is rewarding. Helping people achieve their langauge learning goals is a rewarding job.

5. Teaching English gives you flexibility. Many ESL teachers choose to spend time living and teaching abroad or travelling. English teachers are needed all over the world, so if you have a passion for visiting other countries, teaching English is the profession for you.
